GURGAON: A 20-year-old youth, who had eloped with a girl to marry her, attempted suicide on Friday after the girl's family traced the duo to Gurgaon and handed him over to the police.
Hardeep, a Bhiwani resident, wanted to marry his lady love on Valentine's Day. They came to Gurgaon and took refuge at a house in Badshapur, police said.
The girl's family came to know about the plan and informed the police, which managed to trace the couple, which comes under the Badshahpur police station's jurisdiction. The family was informed of their whereabouts and they subsequently reached the house. The couple was taken to the police. , who detained Hardeep for questioning.
During interrogation, Hardeep took the police to the house where they had been staying since Thursday. He excused himself, saying he wanted to go to the bathroom and consumed poison. When he did not return from the toilet for a while, the cops got suspicious and broke down the door. They found Hardeep unconscious on the floor.
He was rushed to a private hospital in the city from where he was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. A case of attempted suicide has been registered against Hardeep, while the girl has been handed over to her parents.
Sources said the couple intended on staying in Gurgaon after marriage to keep away from their families.
