Mumbai cop held for wife's suicide

PUNE: The Bandra sub-inspector, whose wife committed suicide in Vadgaonsheri on Saturday, was arrested on the charge of causing mental and physical harassment to his wife for dowry.

On Saturday, the victim, Kshama Abhay Pawar's father Balasaheb Nagwade of Shirur, lodged a complaint with the Yerawada police station against Abhay Pawar, his father Sharad and his mother. Nagwade said the Pawar family subjected his daughter to physical and mental torture for dowry, said assistant inspector D B Shingade.

The Yerawada police arrested Abhay Pawar while his father Sharad Pawar, who is a sub-inspector with the Pune police, and Abhay's mother have been booked.

Kshama, 25, had committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of the first floor bedroom at of her in-laws independent house in Vidyanagar in Vadgaonsheri on Saturday afternoon. Pawar was in the living room downstairs when the incident happened.

Abhay Pawar has been arrested under sections 304 (B) (dowry death) and 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in the court on Sunday and has been remanded in police custody till February 12.

Shingade said Pawar's parents will be arrested soon. Sharad Pawar and his wife have been admitted in separate hospitals citing health problems.

Kshama, who is a resident of Babulsar village in Shirur, got married to Pawar in May last year. She was staying in Mumbai with her husband and had come to Pune recently to celebrate 'Sankranti'. Pawar went back to Mumbai a few days later and came back to Pune four days ago.
