CHENNAI: A 35-year-old man hacked his wife to death suspecting her fidelity and attempted to end his life by setting himself ablaze at his residence in Kodungaiyur in north Chennai early on Saturday.
Kumar, who sold tender coconuts, always suspected the fidelity of his wife Kala, police said based on neighbours' accounts. On Friday night, he saw her speaking to some men, including a cable TV operator, and picked up quarrel with her before they retired for the night. However, Kumar woke up in the middle of the night and hacked his wife with the sickle used to cut coconuts before locking himself in a room and setting himself ablaze.
Hearing his cries, Kumar's mother Veerammal woke up and alerted neighbours who rushed him to the KMCH.
Kumar and Kala got married 13 years ago and their three children are students of a school in the area. They were sleeping next to their mother when she was killed.
Police registered a case and arrested Kumar in hospital for the murder of his wife.
